Local Connection

Only applicants who satisfy one of the following local connection criteria will qualify to join the Housing Register and be made an offer of social rented housing in Crawley.

• Applicants who have lived without a break in the Borough of Crawley for the last 5 years.
• Applicants with an immediate family member (mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter) who are currently living in Crawley and has done so continuously for at least five years or more.
• Applicants who have held permanent paid employment in Crawley for the last 5 years

If an applicant makes a successful bid for a property, they will be required to provide proof of their local connection to Crawley.  Unfortunately, if they are unable to provide this proof, the offer will not proceed and they may be removed from the Housing Register.

Please note that applicants who are currently serving in the regular armed forces or who have served in the regular armed forces within the last 5 years are exempt from the local connection criteria.  Existing social housing tenants of Crawley Borough Council and Housing Association tenants living in Crawley are also exempt from this criteria. (other qualification criteria will apply).

What Proof Can I Provide?

The following list is not exhaustive and each case will be considered on its merits.  However, some examples of proofs you could provide are as follows:

1.  If your connection is living in Crawley for 5 years

• Statement or letter from Bank / Building Society / Credit Card / Mortgage / Life Insurance / Investment Company
• UK photo-card driving licence (full or provisional)
• Current old style UK driving licence (full)
• Notification letter from Benefits agency / other Government agency
confirming the right to benefits or pension
• Utility Bill
• Tenancy Agreement or letter from Landlord or Lettings Agent
• TV licence
• Crawley Borough Council Tax Bill
• NHS Medical card
• Vehicle tax renewal document

The proof you supply when asked must be dated at least 5 years before your Housing Register application date, have a Crawley address on and be in the name of you (or your partner).

2. If your connection is a family member in Crawley

• Statement or letter from Bank / Building Society / Credit Card / Mortgage / Life Insurance / Investment Company
• UK photo-card driving licence (full or provisional)
• Current old style UK driving licence (full)
• Notification letter from Benefits agency / other Government agency confirming the right to benefits or pension
• Utility Bill
• Tenancy Agreement or letter from Landlord or Lettings Agent
• TV licence
• Crawley Borough Council Tax Bill
• NHS Medical card
• Vehicle tax renewal document

The proof you supply when asked must be dated at least 5 years before your Housing Register application date, have a Crawley address on and be in the name of your family member.

3. If your connection is 5 years permanent employment in Crawley

• Contract of employment confirming that start date of job was over 5 years before your Housing Register application date and that your job is permanent and based in Crawley.
• Letter from employer confirming the above.
